Dance legends Groove Armada are best known for their late 90s/early 2000s hits ‘I See You Baby’ and ‘Superstylin’ – upbeat tunes that in the past have made perfect TV ad and dance compilation fodder. When I saw, then, that their next EP is out on Jaymo & Andy George’s Moda Black, I was a little surprised – it is, after all, a label famed for its sweaty basement grooves. The Groove Armada guys have pulled the sound off perfectly, though, with the EP’s title track sounding like it could have come from the Moda Black bosses themselves. Similarly, ‘Hyde & Freak’ continues the vibe with techy throbs and a relentless Chicago-style beat.
Final track ‘Jack in Black’ is more of a nod to the Groove Armada of old – a classic house bouncer with soulful vocals aplenty.
Watch out for the ‘Pork Soda’ EP when it drops on Moda Black on 12th February.
